Asian Institute of Technology took part in the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held from 14 to 18 October 2024. Associate Professor and Chair of the Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management Program, Dr. Indrajit Pal, participated in what is known as one of the largest conferences on DRR which focuses on the Asia Pacific region.

APMCDRR is the principal regional forum where world leaders gather to oversee, assess, and strengthen collaboration in the regional implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030. This year, the APMCDRR was organized by the Government of the Philippines and the United Nations Office on Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). It was held in the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila from 14 to 18 October 2024.

Dr. Pal was part of a team of speakers who presented on the Ignite Stage, a platform akin to a TED Talk, to engage with stakeholders and share learnings on disaster risk reduction in order to inspire change and build greater resilience. Dr. Indrajit Pal was joined by Ms. Annlouise G. Castro, Doctoral Student of DPMM AIT as well as colleagues from IOM Regional Office for Asia Pacific and UP Resilience Institute.

The Ignite Stage presentation showcased the research currently being conducted by IOM, UP RI, and AIT on the drivers and triggers of internal displacement across three countries in Asia Pacific: Indonesia, Philippines, and Fiji. The presenters from the research team gave a rundown on the current progress of the research in their respective areas.
