DPMM and partners facilitate community workshops to enhance climate resilience of agricultural livelihoods in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR.
The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), in collaboration with the National University of Laos (NUOL) and Kasetsart University (KU) Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Campus, organized and facilitated a series of community workshops in Champone and Xayboury Districts, Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR on 18 and 19 November 2024. The workshops were organized as part of the ongoing collaborative project titled, “Strengthening Climate Resilience of Agricultural Livelihoods in Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR through Participatory Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA)”.
Supported by the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) Asia and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) Australia, this project aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change on agricultural communities in Savannakhet Province through innovative and inclusive adaptation strategies by leveraging ecosystems and natural resources.
The workshops facilitated the identification of suitable ecosystem-based adaptation measures aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of local agricultural communities by deploying the PPP approach (potential, preferred, and practiced). By directly engaging with vulnerable communities, local
government agencies, and officials, valuable insights were gathered, including the enabling and impeding factors to equitable and sustainable EbA implementation and benefit sharing.
This initiative highlights the transformative potential of participatory approaches in addressing climate change related challenges. By empowering local communities and integrating their perspectives, the project is well placed to promote a resilient agricultural sector in Savannakhet Province that safeguards local livelihoods and fosters environmental stewardship.
